Advance Healthcare Directive

(Sometimes called a “living will”)

One of hazards of life is incapacity due to age, illness, or injury. Legal incapacity means that an individual can no longer make decisions for himself or herself. This creates significant problems in dealing with finances and health care decisions.

We try to help people deal with making advance medical decisions, which are established and documented so that they can be used in the event that the individual becomes incapacitated before they pass away.

In California, the document that sets forth instructions for what to do should an individual become legally incapacitated is called an Advance Health Care Directive. It allows an individual’s nominee to make health care decisions on behalf of that individual should he or she become incapacitated.
